A Childhood Revelation: The Healing Powers of Nature

When I was a young girl, around six or seven, winter was no ordinary season. It was when my skin chose to rebel against the damp, manifesting through sporadic bouts of eczema that eventually spiralled into something more severe: juvenile plantar dermatosis. This common yet chronic condition left the soles of my feet feeling sore, inflamed, and unbearably itchy. Deep cracks would form, splitting painfully under even the slightest weight.

The transformation was sudden and violent. Visits to the doctor led to steroid injections and nightly applications of steroid creams, followed by having my feet wrapped. Yet, as the weeks passed without relief, my parents decided it was time to try something more unconventional. They took me to the sea, insisting I immerse my feet in its cold, biting waters—a task not for the faint-hearted in the depths of winter! After ten minutes, bundled up like a little snowman, I was whisked back to the car, eagerly anticipating the warm, bitter pūhā juice awaiting me at home.

The next morning brought with it a delightful surprise. The pain and itchiness had vanished, the inflammation faded, and my skin was free from those cruel cracks. In my childlike mind, it felt nothing short of magic. That day, the sea transformed into a trusted ally, and the humble pūhā emerged as a symbol of nature’s incredible capacity to heal.

Thus began a new chapter in our family’s routine; the weekly visits to the sea and daily drinking of boiled pūhā juice became staples in our winter wellness regimen. Dairy products were cast aside, making way for this newfound path rooted in nature.

This experience ignited a lifelong fascination with plant lore and plant medicine —where I found a beautiful fusion of tribal knowledge, history, folklore, spirituality, and science. Fortunately, my childhood experience with nature’s remedies can now be supported by scientific fact. Take pūhā, for instance—Sonchus kirkii, also known as New Zealand sow thistle. Packed with Vitamin C and various phenolic compounds, it emerges as a key player in wound healing, expediting recovery from cuts and scrapes. Meanwhile, these phenolic compounds work wonders in reducing inflammation and promoting gut health.

Each mineral plays a distinct role in promoting skin health. Magnesium, for instance, is known to decrease inflammation and improve hydration. This could translate to a more resilient skin barrier, ideal for those suffering from eczema, where the skin is often dry and prone to irritation. Calcium, another bounty of the sea, is essential for maintaining skin's natural moisture levels. Incorporating seawater into your skincare routine might just be the trick for managing flaky patches associated with psoriasis. The salt in seawater acts as a gentle exfoliant, helping to slough off dead skin cells and promote a smoother, healthier complexion

The earth contains a treasure trove of healing ingredients that have been intuitively used by our ancestors worldwide, for centuries,  Today, we are fortunate to validate those age-old intuitions with contemporary research, unlocking the secrets to better health and rejuvenated skin.

In the echoes of my childhood, where healing was viewed as magical, lies a profound truth: nature provides. As I continue to explore the wisdom of plants and their potential, I find myself forever grateful for that little girl who believed in the miraculous powers of Mother Nature (Papatūānuku)
