Thank you for visiting, and happy shopping! Nga mihi nui, Sandra Embracing Nature's Healing: A Childhood Journey When I was around six or seven years old, winter posed a significant challenge for me. During this season, the cold and damp weather exacerbated my occasional eczema flare-ups into a more severe condition known as juvenile plantar dermatosis. This ongoing skin issue left the soles of my feet sore, swollen, and intensely itchy, with painful cracks forming under even the slightest pressure. The onset was sudden and intense. Despite numerous doctor visits, which included steroid injections and nightly cream applications followed by foot wrappings, relief was minimal. In search of alternative remedies, my parents encouraged me to dip my legs into the freezing South Pacific Ocean—a daunting task during the harsh winter months. After just ten minutes, bundled up like a little snowman, I would eagerly return to the car, anticipating the warm, bitter pūhā juice waiting for me at home. This experience initiated a new family ritual: weekly visits to the sea and regular consumption of boiled pūhā juice as part of our winter wellness strategy. We also decided to remove dairy from our diet, embracing this new, nature-inspired approach to health. This childhood experience ignited a lifelong curiosity about plants and natural remedies. It was an exploration where Indigenous knowledge intertwines with history, folklore, spirituality, and science. Fortunately, my early encounters with natural healing have found validation in scientific research. Take pūhā, or Sonchus kirkii , for instance, which is rich in Vitamin C and other compounds beneficial for wound healing and inflammation reduction. Every mineral in this plant supports skin health. Magnesium provides anti-inflammatory properties and enhances hydration, crucial for resilient skin, particularly those with eczema. Seawater offers calcium, essential for keeping skin moisturized, while salt is a gentle exfoliant, promoting smoother, healthier skin. Nature is abundant with healing elements wisely utilized by our ancestors over time. Modern research affirms this ancient wisdom today, providing insights into better health and revitalized skin. Reflecting on my childhood, when healing felt almost magical, reveals a profound truth: nature offers. As I continue to explore the wisdom of plants, I remain deeply grateful for the young girl who believed in the extraordinary wisdom of Papatūānuku — Mother Nature and the ancestors who shared it.
